Newcastle pair grateful for home comforts

Steve Harper felt home was crucial to Newcastle United FC’s 3-0 win against FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who are already “fighting for second place” according to Marc Planus.
Newcastle United FC marked their 100th game in UEFA club competition with a 3-0 victory over FC Girondins de Bordeaux in UEFA Europa League Group D, giving a performance that delighted Toon stalwart Steve Harper and battling midfielder Cheick Tioté. The Newcastle duo both cited home advantage as a major factor in their impressive win while their Bordeaux counterparts, Marc Planus and Mathieu Chalmé, believed that Les Marine et Blancs are already fighting for second place.

Steve Harper, Newcastle goalkeeper
I think Bordeaux are a quality side and we’ve done well tonight. It was end-to-end stuff, which is not what you want, but the manager made a little tactical change and it paid off. The first goal was very important tonight, because they started off making things difficult for us, and then the own goal – with a brilliant cross from Danny Simpson – gave us a little bit of breathing room. Whenever we play here if we get a couple of goals up, we’re going downhill and we fancy our chances. It’s fantastic [having the European nights back at St James' Park], they are really special nights.

Hopefully we can kick on now and make our mark on this group. If you pick up a point away, and keep getting the three points at home, then you’ll do well in the group. That’s what we’ve done.

Cheick Tioté, Newcastle midfielder
The match went well. We played really well as a team today, and when we are together we are difficult to beat. The manager told us that we had to give everything to get a win today and that’s what we did. Everyone is happy now. It was an important step for us in the group – you have to do well in your home games if you want to advance in these competitions. With the help of the fans, we did that. I think we have a big chance now to finish first in the group. We are in a good position.

Marc Planus, Bordeaux defender
We faced a Newcastle team that was really clinical in the first half and better than us in the second half, but we could’ve done better here. I’m convinced that if we had been more clinical, we could have got something more, but it’s difficult when you concede so many goals early. Tonight, they taught us a lesson but I’m sure we can do better against them in the second game.

We need to get points [against CS Marítimo]. We absolutely need to come back with something from there if we don’t want to have problems in this group. We started well, but apparently Brugge have won, so everyone will start from scratch. Two teams are going to have three points to fight for second place because I think Newcastle will finish first. In any case, we’ll have to fight for second place.

Mathieu Chalme, Bordeaux defender
We were mediocre. We were equal to them in the first half but they went back to the changing room with two goals so it was difficult for us. In the second half, they were better than us. It’s a pity that we couldn’t score in the first half to make it tighter.

We’ll need to win [against Marítimo]. We knew that Newcastle and us were favourites. It wasn’t the most important UEFA match but we came here to get a good result and we didn’t get it. Now we’ll need to beat everyone else who wants to qualify for second place and stay in front.

Metalist’s Sosa hails Rapid success

FC Metalist Kharkiv midfielder José Ernesto Sosa was quick to stress the importance of his side’s 2-0 win against SK Rapid Wien, for whom Mario Sonnleitner sounded a positive note.

After an opening-day draw at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, FC Metalist Kharkiv midfielder José Ernesto Sosa emphasised the importance of his side’s 2-0 victory against SK Rapid Wien to his team’s qualification chances in Group K. He is nonetheless anxious for the Ukrainian side improve their finishing if they hope to advance – a hope still shared by Rapid’s Mario Sonnleitner despite two consecutive defeats for the Austrian aspirants.José Ernesto Sosa, Metalist midfielder
Well, I think it was a game where we luckily got the result we wanted, which was a victory, and that gives joy to the people who came here to support us during this important game. We had to try and get a victory today after drawing our first game in Germany against Leverkusen, which was a difficult game. That’s why we are happy. Yes, in the first half it was tough to create chances. Whenever we did create a chance, we failed to finish it. It was a difficult game and they defended deeply, which made it hard. In the second half, we managed to go ahead. That made the game a bit easier, allowing us to create chances and have more space.

Mario Sonnleitner, Rapid defender
When you create more chances than your opponents, you have to take the lead. We are confident and we’re on a good run, so it’s a pity to come off the pitch as losers. There are still four games and 12 points to play for. If we perform well and are more clinical with our opportunities, then it’s still all to play for. We are looking forward to [the Leverkusen] game [on 25 October], and [qualification] is still possible.

Dawson staying positive despite draw

Despite the disappointment of a second UEFA Europa League Group J draw in as many matches, Tottenham Hotspur FC centre-back Michael Dawson is looking on the bright side.
Tottenham Hotspur FC goalscorer Michael Dawson lamented letting a 1-0 lead slip against Panathinaikos FC, but insisted that his team-mates remain upbeat about their UEFA Europa League prospects despite a return of just two points from their opening two Group J matches. Greens forward Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, meanwhile, reflected on a point that he thinks could kick-start the Greek side’s campaign.

Michael Dawson, Tottenham defender
We are definitely disappointed at ending up with a point. In the first half we played really well, passed the ball nicely and got the goal. But to be fair to them, they came out in the second half determined and were the better team. We are just disappointed that we didn’t keep our momentum going and gave the ball away too much. We are staying positive, though. We have some big games coming up and hopefully we can get back to winning ways.

Clint Dempsey, Tottenham forward
It was disappointing just to get the one point; we would have liked to have come away with all three. We have our work cut out a bit now with just the two points from two games, but there is still time left and we are looking forward to the next games. We’ll keep working hard and try to get positive results but we definitely need to get some wins sooner or later. It’s frustrating to concede so late in the game but we will look forward.

Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, Panathinaikos forward
We’ll take it as one point gained I think. We expected it to be a difficult game and we knew we would have to work hard as a team against Tottenham, as they are a great side. They have a team full of pace so it is difficult to explain why the tempo was slow today. Perhaps they wanted to play a slower-paced game and this worked to our advantage in the second half. We are happy with the point … it’s a relief to get off the mark.

Kostas Triantafyllopoulos, Panathinaikos defender
We played well and managed to get the point I think that we deserved. It’s not just the result but the way we battled and passed the ball in the second half. This is the start; we will try to reproduce the same spirit and performance in the coming weeks and months.
